Check out the Windows Live OneCare 2.0 Beta

The Windows Live OneCare team today released the Beta version of OneCare 2.0 -- you can download it here.  Windows Live OneCare 2.0 is designed to make it easier to secure and maintain multiple PCs on a network so that households and small businesses alike can manage their PCs from a single control panel.  Aside from multiple-PC management, new to OneCare 2.0 is:

  • Wi-Fi connection security:  Secure your home Wi-Fi connection and protect the privacy of wireless data transfers.
  • System start-up time optimizer:  Check for ways to shorten PC boot time.
  • Online photo backup:  Back up photos to Windows Live Folders (additional cost).
  • Printer sharing support:  Connect printers to a network so that all users in the vicinity can access the same printer.

OneCare 2.0 was designed specifically with Windows Vista in mind (for instance, it now supports the x64 architecture!).  Try it out and let the Windows Live team know what you think.

Check out the Windows Live OneCare 2.0 Beta (Windows Vista Blog)経由 Windows Live OneCare Team Blogより Live One Care 2 の Beta がリリースされたようです。 少し前の調査では散々な結果だった One Care ですが、その結果を踏まえウィルス検知率が向上したバージョンの Beta ですね。 ろくに Beta テストできない気もするけれど、Windows Server 2...

As much as I would like to try it, I can't as the download servers are being hammered :P

Wow. Some sort of good news.

Except for the fact, correct me if I'm wrong, that

1) Onecare is commercial. Why isn't the boot time optimizer free, or say, included as one of the mythical Vista Ultimate extras? Or doesn't that component work under Vista?

2) It's not a Vista product

3) OneCare sounds remarkably like 'wanker'. Microsoft were told about this repeatedly and still released the product..

So is the startup time optimizer just part of tune-up?

Will OneCare 2.0 take advantage of the exclusive security features in Vista x64 like Address Space Layout Randmonizer, hardware-backed Data Execution Protection, and PatchGuard?

Bryan, that is a GREAT question. I suggest you post the question over on the Windows Live OneCare Blog. The OneCare Team is actively monitoring the blog and looking to answer questions.

beltwaybob, to access the Startup Optimizer in Windows Live OneCare 2.0 beta - go to OneCare settings and the Tune-up tab and you'll see a button at the bottom of the window to "change startup settings". This is where you can access OneCare's new optimizer for startup apps etc.

Having participated in the v1 OC Beta, I have now installed the v2 Beta.

Most works OK for me - except the "Remove Unnecessay files" . . .

While many of us have posted a Problem report re this on the OC forum,  have others within the FC team (or on this blog) seen similar problems ?

I like what I have seen so far. The features are great and intuitive. However, the program is still horribly slow. Why does it take upwards of 4 hours to tune up a laptop with a 60GB drive?

Please tell me how one would go about backing up the Access data file with either Vista or WOC:

C:\Program Files\NameOfApp\Data\datafile.mdb

Thanks.

I've tried it and think it's good. Much simpler then using all the other programs I used to use.
