Microsoft Live Labs Releases Color Picker Gadget

I caught this bit of news tonight from Redmond Pie’s awesome Web Slice for IE8 Beta 2 which shows their latest headlines: Microsoft Live Labs has released a really neat Color Picker Gadget for Windows Sidebar.

Download: Color Picker Gadget from Microsoft Live Labs

Essentially the Color Picker Gadget gives users quick access to RGB color hex codes. This could be extremely handy when working with several apps or doing website development and you’re needing to utilize a palette across the board. This Gadget allows you to create and save your own color palettes and search palettes from the website COLOURlovers. This was a side project of Live Labs Designer Jeff Weir. Not Vista 64-bit compatible, as it need Flash player 64-bit which doesn't exists :(

Brandon, it doesn't work in Vista 64 bit edition :(

I am running 64-bit and run Windows Sidebar in 32-bit mode so I can run all Gadgets.

To do so, exit Windows Sidebar and go to Program Files (x86) and Windows Sidebar and execute sidebar.exe there. Make sure the option to run at start-up is chosen.

Given the fact that 64bit is becoming more and more popular, I think its high time Microsoft developers develop 64bit along side :)

chakkaradeep, agreed but when gadgets use Flash unfortunately it's out of Microsoft's control in regards to 64-bit support.

Brandon, you make a good point. I agree!

I am just glad there is a way for me to load the 32-bit Sidebar so I can still enjoy many of the Gadgets people make even if they use Flash. :-)

Palette selectors that show hex codes have been widely available since 16bit Windows.

hitmouse - yes but this is convenient access to your palettes right on your desktop.

It'd be nice if Vista could automatically detect that a 32bit gadget is about to be installed and give the user the choice of automatically running the 32bit version of sidebar from that point on.  Those are the little nuances I'd like to see in a service pack.

Better yet, I'd like to see Microsoft release a 64bit version of Silverlight and have gadgets that use that instead.

And what to do after just "picking" the color. Isn't this mad without you integrate into an app which people use?

    anonymuos-

It is what it is. A pallette picker. That's it.

It's certainly nice to have a single place that's application independant to pick colors from. You can go from your photo-editing application right to your web editor with one saved setting.

64-bit silverlight all the way! 64-bit especially for this gadget. Think about it. Most people who are using this tool are the ones with the 64-bit high-ram graphics boxes. You are showing the world how limiting Vista 64-bit really is by showing your weaknesses. This in turn causes vendors to not care to install the 64-bit version,  machines. This leads to even less performances for the customers to review your product under. This in turn cheats your customers out of 500 MB of ram, giving them less than they paid for. With 64-bit processors coming out even on the cheapest of laptops this 32-bit only nonsense has got to stop.

Why not make this gadget in Silverlight instead of Flash lol. It'd increase Silverlight adoption, plus Silverlight supports 64-bit (I think)...

So, this is Microsoft's version of Adobe Kuler/Kuler Desktop (AIR)? I will say that they both look pretty good though.
